While it may be difficult for the Type A amongst us to believe, organization does not come naturally to all people. The thought of color-coding classes and buying crisp clean notebooks does not give everyone joy – in fact for many it brings dread.
Not everyone needs to jump for joy at the sight of a perfectly alphabetized binder there are notable benefits to learning basic organization skills, especially as a student.
Organization helps reduce anxiety and it sets the stage for future success – both academically and socially. Disorganized students often report lower confidence, lack of motivation, and an overall feeling of dread as relates to school.
As a parent, what can you do to help your student get organized and reduce academically induced stress? Some ideas below:
Get them a planner. Whether it is a physical agenda or VIINKO’s online planner, having a place to organize their homework, tests, meetings, and other to-dos is essential.
Agree to a schedule. Would you student prefer to work for 2 hours every night or have Sunday’s dedicated to school? Maybe they would like to make Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday their ‘homework nights’ and aim to keep the rest of the week largely free. Find a schedule that works for you and your student and stick to it.
Monitor their progress. Getting organized is a skill that takes time to develop and perfect – one week of scheduling does not make it a habit. It is important you continually check-in with your student and discuss what’s working, what’s not working, upcoming stressors, and how you can continue to fine tune your student’s organization skills to fit their needs.
Work with VIINKO. Sometimes there are simply not enough hours in the day to provide the one-on-one project management attention we’ve outlined above. When this happens, it can be helpful to seek outside support – that’s where VIINKO comes in. With trained coaches, a unique online student planning platform, and a commitment to helping students manage their time effectively so they can achieve success both inside and outside the classroom VIINKO provides the support your student needs to get organized.
