Task management 

    What is task management?

    Task management is the ability to handle multiple tasks by addressing each one individually. This micro-skill gives students the ability to think critically about a task’s relevance and estimated completion time, enabling them to manage their overall workload more efficiently and effectively. 

    Why is it essential?

    Task management is an extremely important micro-skill which helps develop time management and organization without becoming overwhelmed. By selecting individual tasks, estimating the amount of time they require, and determining their urgency, students are able to manage their work and more accurately gauge the tasks they can achieve within a time period, developing holistic time management skills.

      Task initiation 

      What is task initiation?

      Task initiation is the ability to independently start a task without procrastination. Task initiation also includes acting without the need of constant reminders or supervision, allowing students to proactively address their assignments. 

      Why is it essential?

      Task initiation is an essential part of time management and organization as it helps develop independence and curtails procrastination. Issues with task initiation creates frustration for both students and educators as the tasks become less enjoyable and require more time. Developing task initiation enables students to efficiently and independently tackle assignments.

        Self-autonomy

        What is self-autonomy?

        Self-autonomy is a student’s ability to take responsibility for his or her own learning. Self-autonomy allows students to enjoy the freedom of their own learning journey by facilitating the personal identification and management of learning goals, the exploration of personal interests, and the understanding of learning strategies.

        Why is it essential?

        Self-autonomy enhances a student’s time management and organizational skills by fostering an independent and responsible learner. Having self-autonomy increases personal motivation and engagement by empowering students to immerse themselves in their personal interests at the pace they set. Creating an active learning environment, self-autonomy equips students to take responsibility over their own time management and organization.

          Self-awareness

          What is self-awareness?

          Self-awareness is the ability to self-assess personal performance and behavior to appropriately respond in varying social situations. This micro-skill focuses on both the awareness of personal behaviors and how these behaviors are perceived by others. Overall, self-awareness aids in the understanding of an individual’s emotions as well as the emotions of others.

          Why is it essential?

          Self-awareness plays a pivotal role not only in time management and organization, but also in emotional and social development. Prompting students to reflect on their own capabilities, self-awareness allows students to accurately assess their performance to determine how much time a task will require. By becoming self-aware, students can become emotionally perceptive of themselves and others.

            Prioritization

            What is prioritization?

            Prioritization is the ability to determine which tasks are most important and organize them accordingly. A big part of this micro-skill is also the ability to break down large tasks into small steps which are then prioritized based on their importance to the whole. 

            Why is it essential?

            Prioritization is an essential micro-skill in the development of time management and organizational skills. It allows students to organize their time based on the importance, urgency, and magnitude of their assignments, mitigating frustration and panic. Identifying the necessity of tasks, students are able to focus on the most pressing matters without feeling overwhelmed by other minor tasks.
